Advanced Academic Preparation

This 7-week intensive course is designed for students who plan to enter an undergraduate or graduate 
degree program at a university in the United States. It will prepare students for university-level academic 
study by:

◆focusing on academic writing skills, including:

  • academic essay format (two essays per week will be assigned) 
  • summarizing skills 
  • vocabulary building 
  • issues related to plagiarism and academic honesty (paraphrasing, citing sources, and using quotations 
    appropriately) 
◆introducing research skills, including a tour of Columbia University’s libraries and instruction in the use 
of CLIO

◆improving discussion skills, including fluency and advanced-level vocabulary, thus preparing students for 
participation in seminar discussions

◆teaching presentation skills, including pronunciation, vocal projection, and appropriate body language

◆building lecture-listening and note-taking skills by drawing on a variety of resources including:



  • live lectures by guest speakers 
  • video tapes of Columbia University professors lecturing 
  • a Columbia University E-Seminar (an on-line course designed by a Columbia professor) 
  • two language laboratory hours per week for independent work 

◆teaching skills for coping with extensive reading

◆introducing students to the electronic classroom

Students in the program will have access to Columbia University facilities, including the University libraries, 
the language laboratory, computers, and the gym.

Students without a previous or current level-8 placement in the American Language Program must submit 
a score of at least 575 on the paper-based TOEFL or a score of at least 230 on the computer-based 
TOEFL for admission to this program. English proficiency levels for new students must be confirmed on 
arrival by a score of at least 8a (out of 10) on the American Language Program’s English Placement Test, 
part II (essay) and an interview for those with scores below 590 or 243; regular intensive courses are 
available as an alternative for those who fail to qualify.



English for Professional Purposes : BUSINESS

An intensive three-week English for Business program that begins in late July.

Classes balance business content with language study.

Students study with a select group of 18-20 advanced English students, receiving detailed instruction and 
individualized feedback on presentation, writing, and management skills.

Course curriculum includes:

  • Case studies from such companies as Merrill Lynch, Starbucks, and Procter and Gamble. 
  • Current business trends--globalization, employment in the new economy, and doing business in 
    risky areas. 
  • Private tours of New York financial institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal 
    Reserve Bank, and other Wall Street landmarks. 
  • Up-to-date print, audio, and video materials. 
  • Assignments requiring library and field research, teamwork, and business writing: case analyses, 
    proposals, reports. 
  • Language skills, vocabulary, and grammatical structures useful for business.
The program provides opportunity for students to meet and socialize with future business school 
colleagues and other international business people from different areas of the world, enjoying New York 
cultural and entertainment offerings during out-of-class hours. Students discuss issues with executives at 
business institutions and organizations, and work with highly experienced instructors who publish and 
present in this field.

Students in the program have access to Columbia University facilities, including the Business School 
library, language laboratory, computers, and the gym.

Students must have a score of at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL test or a score of at least 250 on 
the computer-based TOEFL test for admission to this program.

Students must already hold a university degree.



English for Professional Purposes : LAW

An intensive 3-week English for Law program that begins in late July.

This course is designed for lawyers, law school professors, and law school students from outside the United 
States and other legal professionals from outside the United States with an interest in learning about the 
American legal system.

Participants improve their English language skills and master the language of law while learning about the 
U.S. judicial system.

Course curriculum includes: 

  • Instruction in English in a legal context. 
  • Special lectures by distinguished lawyers and law professors. 
  • Visits to institutions important to legal professionals, such as the federal or state courthouse and/
    or local law firms. 
  • Legal terminology and concepts. 
  • Observation of an arraignment hearing and/or trial in progress. 
  • Private meetings with judges and/or assistant district attorneys. 
The program provides opportunity for students to meet and socialize with future law school colleagues 
from different areas of the world, and enjoy New York cultural and entertainment offerings during out-of-
class hours. Having become familiar with the fundamental language and concepts of the American legal 
system, those students who successfully complete this program should be comfortable discussing legal 
matters and issues.

Students in the program have access to Columbia University facilities, including the University libraries, 
language laboratory, computers, and the gym. They also have access to Legal Resources, including such 
legal databases as LEXIS Academic Universe.

Students must have a score of at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL test or a score of at least 250 on 
the computer-based TOEFL test for admission to this program.

Students must already hold a university degree.
